Mini-interview with Charlotte Church today in the Metro. She was the ‘voice of an angel’ classical singer from about 10 years ago. She’s Welsh and had a bit of a pop career a couple of years ago. Anyway, the topic is On President Bush:
He came around to thank all the performers who appeared at his inauguration in 2001. He asked where I was from. ‘I’m from Wales,’ I replied. ‘What state is Wales in?’ he asked. ‘Um, it’s not in America. It’s in the UK.’ I felt really embarrassed for him.
How many things are wrong with this?
- When some of Tim’s friends who were in a band went on tour in America years ago they were asked where they were from. When they replied Wales, they got ‘where in England is that?’ At least they got it in the right country! At least they knew it was the UK not the US!!
- If someone is performing at your inauguration for President of the United States, the least you could do is know something about them. Bush may not have been involved with the planning but surely someone could have given him a bit of info to say this girl is from the UK.
- Charlotte Church has a very heavy Cardiff accent. It’s unmistakable as being NOT American. Again, even if he’d thought she was English he would have been closer than ‘what state is that in?’
Lord Almighty he never ceases to amaze me with his stupidity. No wonder, then, that his geographical skills are so incredibly poor if he can’t even discern that Wales is in the UK.
