Interesting op-ed piece in the Guardian today about a Pakistani woman whose mother never learned English. The British government has been discussing requiring all new migrants to learn English prior to being allowed in the country. Most liberals would decry this as discriminatory and right-wing but this lady says that, actually, it is a good thing as her widowed mother now proves. Her husband always took care of anything that required English but now that he is gone she is essentially shut off from the world and very dependent on her children. One would hardly move to France and not learn French, now would they?
