It seems that, for the most part, the Republican nomination is sewn up. John McCain looks liable to win the nomination. That doesn’t mean Romney can’t come and pluck it from him in the coming months but it is certainly looking less likely that he’ll be the nominee. Good on McCain. Except for the fact that he’s a Republican I’ve got nothing really bad to say about him. With the horrific trashing he took at the hands of Bush’s election machine in South Carolina in 2000 I think it’s great that he’s been able to come back and do so well. It seems to be the epitome of a ‘comeback.’
As for the Democrat side, things still look wide open. Yes, Clinton won yesterday’s Florida primary but, like in Michigan, she won’t get any delegates out of it. They were wins in name only. In spite of my preference for Obama over Clinton, I don’t like the fact that she has won two primaries and will have nothing to show for it. I find it slightly odd that the Democratic Party is ‘punishing’ the Michigan and Florida state parties for moving their primaries up too early by taking away their delegates. In reality, the DNC is punishing the voters! They’re saying to Floridians and Michiganians ‘your vote doesn’t matter this year.’ That’s not what democracy is about, now is it?
If the nominee race between Obama and Clinton becomes any tighter, an Obama win wouldn’t be wholeheartedly fair and square. That’s very unfortunate considering the fiasco of the 2000 election.
I haven’t mentioned any of this before because, quite frankly, I forgot Florida also had its delegates taken away. Now that I’ve remembered, I thought it necessary to put my two cents in…as I inevitably do in many things. I want Obama to win the nomination but I want him to win it fairly and not simply because Michigan and Florida had their delegates taken away. Here’s hoping he shores up the nomination next Tuesday with many, many wins across the nation leaving no doubt that he is Joe Schmo Democrat’s choice to stand for our party.
