I thought this coming Sunday would be four weeks since I gave up smoking but having looked at my handy-dandy spreadsheet, this past Sunday marked four full weeks without a cigarette. I did happen to buy myself a lovely pair of shoes on Saturday as a congratulatory gift. Hooray for me! I’ve also now saved £112.83, though I think it is definitely more but I have no way of really knowing. Good to have some sort of figure though and that isn’t a bad one. Nor is going four weeks without a cigarette.

One: Nanner, nanner, nanner President Bush and all the lame Congressmen and women who voted for the Patriot Act. That vile piece of legislation aimed at ‘protecting’ our country when in reality it’s only hurting our civil liberties is useless!!!! Why? Because there are no terrorists in America. The song from An American Tail springs to mind. ‘There are no cats in America.’ Supplant terrorists for cats and there ya go.

“The vast majority of cases turn out to include no link to terrorism once they go to court,” the report found. The analysis “suggests the presence of few, if any, prevalent terrorist threats currently within the U.S.”

I love it when I’m right. Well, me and a lot of commentators who are much smarter than me. Just call me Smugly von Smuggerson today.

Two: I’ve quit smoking and I’m proud of it. Yet I still think this is extremely stupid. I watched Top Gear on Sunday night and found the pipe-smoking bit hilarious. I especially liked it when Jeremy Clarkson put the pipe in his mouth backwards – while it was lit, mind – and got tobacco in his mouth. It was great. I’m close enough to my ‘smoking roots’ (if you will) to still be rather adamant about smokers’ rights. It was a gag for a television show; get over it. If no one in the audience complained, where is the problem? So they flouted the smoking ban, big freaking whoop. Some people seem to have nothing better to do than complain about people smoking. Get a life.

And that’s my two cents for the day.

Today hasn’t been too bad. It’s been a good test for me as I worked from home this morning and then had this afternoon off. This would have been a day when I probably could have smoked about 20 cigarettes in just the past eight hours, let alone 24. Sure there were several times this morning when I was sat at my laptop that I wanted the ashtray next to me and a cigarette in my hand but I got through it. It’s day six and I think things are getting easier. Day seven tomorrow and then it’ll be a whole week. Whew. A week ago I probably would have said there was no way I could do this but I have. Hopefully with each day it’ll get easier and easier.

So here’s an interesting tidbit: there’s a Boston Celtics v Minnesota Timberwolves NBA basketball game going on live in London tonight at the O2 arena in Greenwich. Slightly strange, yes, but they’re also bringing over the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants to play an NFL football game at Wembley on the 28th of this month. The strangest thing, though, is the sound of a true Londoner (Cockney to an extent; think Michael Caine, Bob Hoskins or anyone from either of Guy Ritchie’s films Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels or Snatch) commentating on an American basketball game. It’s very odd to listen to. It’d be like an American commentating on cricket. It just doesn’t go.

And by the way, the fourth day of quitting smoking hasn’t been too bad. The only thing that sucks is that I have to work until 6.00 every night this week (stupid rota). Thankfully the communications team has had a couple of interesting website tasks for me to do starting around 3.30 each day. They have kept me busy and not bored so that’s been good.

Day 2 kind of sucked a bit too but not until about 6.00 last night. That’s when I started to really have a hard time. That’s my normal relaxation time. I sit in front of the telly smoking several cigarettes waiting for Tim to come home. Even with a lozenge in my mouth I was having a pretty difficult time. I was almost on the verge of tears at one point so I just looked at my pen (fake cigarette for hand-to-mouth purposes) and said out loud ‘geez nicotine does funny things to you.’ Then Tim came home, I got a nice hug and we went and got a Subway sandwich and I was fine.

This morning started off fine but then I got to work. I am very tired for some reason this morning and it was really getting me down in the last hour. I think I wanted a cigarette or maybe I was just tired. I couldn’t really tell but I didn’t like the way I felt. To help matters I fixed myself a cup of tea and had a gingery Cornish biscuit (aka cookie). I think that helped. Hey, a little sugar here and there isn’t going to hurt.

I’m now downing a bottle of water as quickly as possible because it’s time for my next lozenge. The only thing that kind of sucks about the lozenges is you can’t eat or drink while sucking on one because it may block some of the nicotine absorption. I wouldn’t mind so much but this morning I had to stare at my ready-to-eat piece of toast while I finished the lozenge. I also can’t stay hydrated with the water while sucking on a lozenge so I need to drink up. All in all, today kind of sucks but I’m getting through it.

I didn’t really have much time to write yesterday-day one of my quitting smoking-because I found lots to keep me occupied. I meticulously cleaned our bedroom and bathroom. I would have meticulously cleaned our living room and kitchen but, unfortunately, that’s where my husband was working so I couldn’t really manoeuvre around him as easily so I left it. I also did his laundry and when I finally sat down to relax I had a bag of popcorn to keep my mouth and hands occupied.

All in all it wasn’t too bad. After a couple of hours I did get to thinking ‘gee a cigarette would be nice right now.’ But I fought it with the lozenges, water and gum. Oh, and a pen in my hand helped quite a bit too.

Today is the first day in work without smoking. I find it’s been rather easy so far. I don’t get too stressed at work anymore so that shouldn’t be a trigger. I’ve got my gum, my lozenges and a nice bottle of yummy M&S peach and raspberry flavoured water. If I really have to have something sweet, there are some Irish truffles in our fridge which I will allow myself to have one of just to satisfy the craving. The mornings are supposed to be the worst but at the moment I’m coping quite well I think. I’ll let you know if there are any changes to that!

For those who don’t know me, I’m a smoker, a heavy one at times. I’ve finally decided to give up. I start tomorrow. I’ve got lozenges and what I’m pretty sure is willpower. I’m actually somewhat excited about it. So in order to help me I’ve decided to detour this blog for a bit and use it as a diary of sorts if I need to vent about my experiences and feelings while the dreaded nicotine leaves my body. I probably will still write the occasional ‘normal’ post but I hope writing out what I’ve experienced will help me deal with things.

It may be boring as hell and not worth writing or reading but we’ll see. If nothing else those who know me and read this blog know that I’m giving it a go. I may not be successful this first time but I’ve always got the new drug Champix as a backup. My mother has been 30 days without a cigarette and she’s smoked for 40 years. If she can do it, so can I!!! Wish me luck!
